cooking a whole chicken in an air fryer

I've had an air fryer for the past year and have used it for so many meals. I'm so excited to start sharing those air fryer meal ideas with you, so make sure you sign up for my newsletter at the end of this post so you don't miss any of my delicious recipes and tips!

I use my air fryer almost every single day. It's such a time saver, and everything I cook in it comes out perfectly cooked, crispy and full of flavor. I feel really good about feeding myself and my family meals that haven't been deep fried, and it has even helped us stop eating out as often as we used to. We no longer go out for deep fried hot wings, we make them at home instead and they are ridiculously delicious! I've also been making "grilled" chicken breasts in the air fryer for the past couple of months since the weather here in KY has been so rainy and cold. They literally come out moist on the inside and crispy on the outside every single time. This week, I decided that instead of taking my weekly trip to Costco to buy a rotisserie chicken, that I would try to make my own in the air fryer. HOLY MOLY...it turned out perfect! My family was super impressed with the fact that I turned out a "roasted" chicken within 30 minutes and could not believe how full of flavor it was! Let me show you just how easy it is to cook your own whole chicken in the air fryer at home!

What do you need to make a whole chicken in the air fryer?

    • a whole 3-4 lb. chicken
    • salt and pepper or your favorite poultry seasoning
    • 1 whole lemon
    • an air fryer ( I used the Philips XL Air Fryer PURCHASE HERE )

How do you air fry a whole chicken?

Step 1 - Start by patting your whole chicken until the skin is mostly dry.

Step 2 - Coat with oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper or your favorite poultry seasoning.

Step 4 - Preheat your air fryer to 350° to 360° depending on the model of your air fryer.

Step 5 - Place the whole chicken in your air fryer's basket. I have to tell you that my chicken was a bit larger than 4 lbs. this time, so it was a tight fit. I recommend staying between 3 - 4 lbs.

Step 6 - Set the timer for 30 minutes. Once finished cooking, check to be sure that the temp of the chicken is at least 165°. You should stick a meat thermometer into the deepest part of one of the thighs without touching the bone to be sure it is fully cooked.

Step 7 - Remove chicken and allow it to rest for 10 minutes.

Step 8 - Cut up and enjoy!

This air fryer chicken is perfect sliced up for dinner, or shredded for tacos, salads and soups!

I tried this today, but I have a 7 qt air fryer, so I used a substantially larger chicken! It took a full hour, but was absolutely perfect!! I rubbed the chicken all over with avocado oil, salted and peppered liberally with pink Himalayan sea salt and cracked peppercorns, and then I stuff the cavity with the quartered lemon AND 2 sprigs each of fresh sage, rosemary and thyme. It was exquisite!!
