This homemade hot cocoa recipe with free printable chalkboard labels is sure to top the list of favorite holiday gifts!
One of my family’s favorite things to enjoy during the cold winter months is hot cocoa! It’s one of the first things Kate asks for when she gets home from school, and it’s become an afternoon ritual for us to catch up on our day over a mug of hot chocolate…she enjoys hers with a candy cane and marshmallows, while I opt for marshmallows and crushed peppermint sprinkles! A few years ago, we started making our own hot cocoa mix. It’s soooo much better than the store bought mixes in our opinion, and makes a great Christmas gift too! Today, I want to share our homemade hot cocoa recipe!

If you are making it to give as a gift, you can add one of these cute little Chalkboard Mason Jar Labels to the top for a little added touch! I also like to tie a candy cane and a sprig of rosemary onto my jar lid using red and white baker’s twine. I think it just gives it a lovely touch! To download and print the labels above, click HERE! Simply right click the image to save it once you click over. The image above will not print out the correct size.

Just so you’ll know and hopeful that you might be able to fix it, there are three of the letter “r” in your “Merry Christmas” hot cocoa printable chalkboard tags. Love this idea – THANK YOU!
Thank you so much for pointing this out to me, Penny! I fixed it! I guess all of those R’s just ran together for me…Merry Christmas! ~Jess
What is the amount of Hot Chocolate mix to use per cup?
We use two large spoonfuls…so yummy!
So do you just add water to the two spoonfuls?
Teaspoons or tablespoons? Also, milk or water?
Are your large spoons tablespoon and is this for 1 cup of water?
Thanks Jess
How much of this mix do you use to make a cup of cocoa? And do you use water or milk? Might be helpful to add to the directions.
2 heaping tablespoons with hot water works well – great for glamming.or early mornings in a hotel room!
One of the ladies in my Sunday School class gave me this recipe in with all the ingredients.
(Snowball Soup).
Make your hot cocoa and put it in a mug.,
Then add a kiss and maybe a hug.
The next thing you do will be the trick.
Stir the soup with your peppermint stick.
But wait a minute …. that’s not all.
Cover the top with some snowballs!!
Now the soup is finished and you’re all done.
Stir occasionally and sip, YUM! YUM!
Remember this recipe when the weather takes it boll.
Enjoy this magic soup from the North Pole!
Merry Christmas
In a small treat bag, she had an individual cocoa, a Hershey kiss, a peppermint stick and marshmallows. When I saw your homemade cocoa recipe, I thought this would be nice to attached to the jar. (Although, you would need some Hershey kisses. Be I don’t think anyone would complain even if they did not use in the “soup”
Hi Jessica,
First, want to thank you for your amazing tips, printables and recipes, all so generously offered for free. I try and publicize your site as much as I can in return for your hard work.
I write today because Xmas is around the corner and I wanted to try out your Hot Chocolate Mason Jar gift idea and have successfully printed the little labels to go on the jars. However, when it comes to printing out the hot chocolate recipe, nothing comes up. I have a screenshot I could send you but I cannot attach it here.
Thanks again for all your hard work. Hope the chocolate recipe is availbable soon.
when you say 1 cup cocoa – which kind do you mean, like Hershey’s cocoa or Nestle quick which is made to mix with milk already
Hershey’s cocoa, not the premixed chocolate milk or hot cocoa mix.
