I have always enjoyed sewing, but for some reason, am really lazy when it comes to getting my sewing machine out. It really only takes seconds to get it out, but for some reason, I rarely do it. Well, this week, I challenged myself to get it out and sew some pillows. Not ordinary pillows, though…dropcloth pillows! Hmmm? Dropcloth pillows? Ummm…you have no idea how gorgeous they can be. I have been fawning over Linda’s pillows for months. Her blog, It All Started With Paint, is one of my favorites…a must read! So, anyhoo…I decided to try to make my own. Actually, I made three, but the third one…not so cute.
This is the pillow that I had envisioned. Simple, floral, and completely different than anyone else’s pillow. I started by sewing two squares of dropcloth together on 3 sides, then flipped it right side out. Next, I took a really long, thin strip of the dropcloth and sewed a ruffle…this took an incredibly long time to pull together, but it was so worth it! Then, I hand stitched it onto the pillow case. To finish the middle, I made a rolled flower rosette and hot glued it right in the center. I slipped an old throw pillow in the case and sewed the bottom of the pillow together with my machine, and that was it. I am certain that there is a better way to close the pillow, but I am all about easy, instant gratification.
Now, pillow number two…I love it as much as pillow number one now that it’s finished. It’s the first thing I have ever stenciled…I know, I’m a little slow on the uptake over here, but now I may become a stenciling fool! Watch out! Well, I love yellow…like really, really love yellow. Yellow is the color of sunshine after all, and who doesn’t love a little sunshine? I made two ruffles and sewed them onto the pillow case, then I stenciled JAUNE…which is french for yellow. I don’t speak french or anything, I just saw it somewhere and thought, I like that! Adorable, huh?
Now, time for a little secret…
The only thing that I didn’t love about using dropcloth…it frays. I had little strings all over myself and the floor, so I tried a little something…I dabbed all of the frayed edges with Mod Podge.
It sealed the edges perfectly, and dried clear. I left some of the frays, because I love the look, but if you feel the edges, you can tell…they will fray no more!
So, do you have something that you have been dying to do, but haven’t tried yet?

Oh Yes- Drop Cloth Girl– YOU ROCK!! These are so adorable. WOW! You really did it..love the rosette …and YOU Stenciled!! They look great Jess!
