I love a good thrifted project, and am so excited about this one! I have a thing for wine crates...they can be used in so many ways! I've used them to store papers and magazines, stacked them to make bedside tables, and use them for shoe storage too! This may be my favorite wine crate project yet! It took very little effort to transform and now I have the cutest Wine Crate Serving Tray ever!
This little tray is my project for a super fun Thrift Store Devor Makeover Challenge that I joined with some other talented bloggers! Last month, I shared a Whiskey Barrel Table (are you detecting a theme here?) Be sure to check out their projects at the end of this post!
All you need to make one of these is a smallish wine crate or wooden box, some paint, a drill and some rope.
I started by drilling two holes on each side for the handles. Since I'm using rope for the handles, there is no need for perfection here!
Next, I whitewashed the crate with one light coat of chalky finish paint. Again, no need for perfection, I want it to look a little worn and slightly beachy.
I decided to add a little grey with my favorite Maison Blanche Lime Wax. It gave it the perfect worn beachy look that I was going for with very little effort. Please excuse the sock...I can't imagine why so many of Matt's socks are missing ;)
To finish it off, I strung some rope through the holes on each side and tied each end in a knot so they won't come out.
I love the way it turned out! It fits perfectly with our home's decor, and I'm sure will serve many purposes, but for now, it houses my favorite magazines, a horseshoe (we live in horse country after all), and a faux boxwood plant!
Isn't it super cute? You can score these crates at liquor stores sometimes if you ask if they have any. I've never paid more than $5 for one. It also helps to have a momma who likes to hunt them down for you too...thanks, Mom!
