Your microwave can take a real beating, especially since the microwave is one of the most used appliances in homes. Cleaning your microwave can be a real pain unless you have the right solution. Today, I want to share my favorite homemade microwave cleaning spray with you. This stuff will clean your microwave and leave it smelling great too!
I’m going to be honest, cleaning my microwave is usually an afterthought. It’s one of those things that seems to stay dirty until I open it to warm something up and realize that it’s completely gross. Between the warmed up slices of pizza that seem to splatter everywhere and the soups that seem to make a mess even if we cover them up, there is always something splattered all over the inside.
The good news is that you only need a few household items to make your own oven cleaning spray. I really like the idea of using this natural method instead of spraying it with chemicals. I mean, my family cooks food in there. I really don’t feel good about chemical residue being heated up with our food…ya know what I mean?
Homemade Microwave Cleaning Spray Ingredients
- 1/2 Cup Distilled Water
- 1/2 Cup Lemon Juice
- 1/2 Cup Distilled White Vinegar
Pour all ingredients into a clean spray bottle.
Shake well before each use to make sure all ingredients are mixed. Since this is a natural cleaning solution, it’s missing chemical binders that just keep everything together. There may be a little bit of separating between uses.
Before cleaning, run your microwave on high for 1 minute. This will warm up the inside and help the solution work best. Liberally spray the inside of your microwave with your lemon cleaning solution and let sit for about a minute.
Use a clean cloth to easily wipe all food splatters away. For tough food spills, spray directly onto the spots and use a scrub sponge to help loosen the food, then wipe clean with a cloth or paper towel.
This microwave cleaner will leave the inside of your microwaved clean and fresh smelling too! The lemon mixed with the heat of the microwave helps to steam the food stains and makes them much easier to remove. You can substitute fresh squeezed lemon juice or 15 drops of lemon essential oils for the store bought lemon juice with the same result. This homemade cleaner will last for up to one week in your pantry or for up to 3 months if placed in your refrigerator.
****Note**** If you use lemon essential oils instead of lemon juice, there is no need for refrigeration.
