I love taking old things and making them new again. It makes me especially giddy when it doesn’t cost much at all. I made this fun coat rack using an old flea market headboard that I’ve been hiding in my garage for the past year. I had brought it home with the intention of using it in my daughter’s room. I painted it a pretty shade of aqua when I brought it home, then ended up going in a different direction for her bed. I loved it so much that I just couldn’t get rid of it, so there it sat much to my husband’s dismay for an entire year. I just knew it could be used for something, and then finally about a month ago it hit me…it would make the perfect coat rack!!! I used some inexpensive hooks that I picked up at the Home Depot and DecoArt’s Americana Clear Chalkboard Coating to give it a whole new life as a cute jacket and coat rack! She absolutely loves it, and I am one happy mamma because all of her bags, jackets, and shoes aren’t spread all over the place!
Items Needed:
Old Headboard
Americana Clear Chalkboard Coating
Hooks
Spackling
Instructions:
To make your own headboard turned coat rack you will need an old headboard. You can paint it or leave it as is...whatever you like!
Make sure to patch any holes with spackling. Allow to dry, then sand off the excess.
Pour your clear chalkboard coating into a dish or paper bowl.
Apply one coat vertically, and one coat horizontally over the area you would like to use as a chalkboard, allowing the paint an hour to dry in between coats.
After 24 hours, lightly rub chalk over the painted surface to condition. Wipe the chalk off, and your area is ready for writing and drawing.
Drill your hooks in where you want them or use some sticky back hooks if you'd rather not drill holes!
Lean it up against a wall, and secure with a hook and eye closure so it won't tip forward. Now you are ready to hang all of your goodies. You can write what is hanging on the chalkboard surface, or a fun little message!
Isn't it absolutely adorable? If you have younger children, this would work great for teaching them to hang up their own jackets and back packs, or even towels in a child's bathroom!
So, do you have an old headboard lying around?

Make any paint chalkboard paint? This little chalkboard junky did not need to know that!!! LOL So cute. I can see why you hung on to that. I would have too. Really cute Jessica. I bet Kate loves it. So versatile with the writing being temporary too.
