In Kentucky, the Classic Mint Julep reigns supreme over all other cocktails. This Mint Julep Recipe is the perfect drink for a Derby party or just to impress your friends!

how to make a classic mint julep

The Kentucky Derby is right around the corner, which means it’s time to break out the bourbon and fresh mint to make one of my favorite drinks, the Classic Mint Julep! The Mint Julep has been the official drink of the Kentucky Derby since 1983, and it is said that they serve over 80,000 juleps during Derby weekend. Mint Juleps are typically served in pewter or silver cups with lots of shaved ice, but can easily be made at home and served in a glass. The real trick for making the perfect Mint Julep at home is using fresh mint!

How to Make a Mint Julep

Step 1 – Add 4-5 mint sprigs and 1/2 ounce of simple syrup to a cup. I love making my own Homemade Simple Syrup for Cocktail Recipes.

Step 2 – Use a muddler to smash the mint leaves so the natural oils mix with the simple syrup.

Step 3 – Add 2 1/2 ounces of bourbon.

Step 4 – Add crushed or shaved ice to the top of the glass and mix well.

Step 5 – Garnish with a sprig of mint and enjoy!
