Odors can easily become trapped in carpets and rugs. Make your own deodorizing carpet powder with two ingredients, and remove food, pet and household odors from your carpet with ease! Just sprinkle this homemade carpet deodorizer on carpets and rugs, then vacuum away the stink!
We love our pets, truly we do, but let's face it...they can stink! I have lived in fear that our home smells like animals for years, and am constantly doing whatever I can to keep that from being true. Previously, I shared my Homemade Fabric Refresher Spray Recipe with you, and today I want to share how to make your own deodorizing carpet powder sprinkle with just 2 ingredients! It will have your carpet and rugs smelling fresh in no time!
You will need an clean, empty mason jar, 1 ½ cups of baking soda and 10 drops of essential oils...I prefer lavender!
First, use a nail to poke holes in the lid of your mason jar. I use these shakers for everything! You can see the how to on my Mason Jar Cinnamon - Sugar Shakers by clicking the Crafts button in the menu bar at the top of my site :)
Now that you have your shaker ready, add your baking soda to a large bowl.
Next, add your essential oils.
Mix well with a whisk or spoon, making sure to get all lumps mixed in. Pour the mixture into your homemade mason jar shaker.
Now, sprinkle your carpet and wait for 20 - 30 minutes.
Vacuum and enjoy the smell of clean!

Hi I was wondering do you cover up the holes when not in use? Does the essential oil smell fade after time? This is a great idea. I am making it right now. Just wondering about the above.
Jessica says
I don't cover the holes...I just sit it on a shelf. When the scent starts to fade, I just add some more essential oils and shake really well again. Hope this helps!

I have an idea for covering the holes in between uses...remove the flat lid (the one you poked nail holes in) and place it on a sheet of cardstock or thin cardboard. Trace around it with a pencil and then cut out the circle. Each time you finish using the carpet refresher, place the cut-out circle under the lid with holes and put the lid together as usual. Works great for me!

I reuse Parmesan cheese containers. You can lock up top when not in use. I usually layer baking soda and oils and shake well vs having to clean another bowl. Before using just give a couple shakes again to reactivate scent.

I use Parmesan containers as well. Really work well for anything you need a shaker for.

Does this work for pet smells as well?

I save and use spice containers, especially those with the perforated holes.

Take 1 part of wood ash, one part of soil, mix them together, mix this with some water (but not to be runny), smear this on the carpet and then wash it down with water.
It takes all smells out!!!
