Room temp coconut oil if you live in Florida! Otherwise, warm it slightly before mixing. Other oils can work if peppermint is strong for you (wintergreen is nice). Also add a little sea salt to help fight bacteria. And use a pea size amount. Has worked well for years for me.

I like to learn to make homemade deodorant anti perspirant.
Katie Anne says
According to Dr. Robert Cassar of Earther Academy, you will not need deodorant anymore if your body has detoxed fully. I personally use a natural deodorant (Toms) but, hopefully, one day I won't need it at all! Blessed be !

Can this be used for dogs? I would think so.
Jessica says
I would not use this for your dog...they may have an aversion to the peppermint oil. I would look up a dog specific toothpaste...I'll try to find one and see if I can help!

I'm glad your affiliate essential oil is NOW because they do steam distillation to extract their oils. Thumbs up for you for the recipe & for being affiliated with quality!

Clove oil in your toothpaste recipe works really well as an antibacterial. Dentists use clove oil all the time in their practice. It’s a hot oil so start out with small amount. Clove and orange is so nice!
Thank you for all your
Wonderful recipes and
Tips!

This recipe rocks! I have been making a similar recipe for years and I never ever get cavities. So much better than the commercial toothpastes out there with their toxic ingredients! I also use Dentitox (https://bit.ly/HappyHealthySmile) for my gums and my teeth and its an amazing complement to my DIY toothpaste. This is great! Thanks!

Love this recipe! Just curious, have you ever tried using other essential oils? Like say lavender, or orange for instance? I find peppermint to be harsh, and actually use kids toothpaste now because I can't stand it.

Do you have a toothpaste recipe without Baking Soda? I'm wanting to make a natural toothpaste for someone who is allergic to corn and corn products. Thanks!
Caliandra says
I don't believe Baking Soda is a corn product. I think you might be confusing it with Baking Powder
Ivory says
I will be making this today. I love the three natural ingredients. Thanks!

In your recipe, you say use peppermint essential oil, in video you say use peppermint extract. These are not the same. Does the coconut oil reharden the paste after it is made?
Anna says
Essential oils are pretty toxic to consume, peppermint extract should have the same effect
Melissa says
Yes! Peppermint essential oil can be dangerous. Peppermint extract would be so much better for this.
Alkaline says
Yes essential oils are toxic to consume but this is a tooth paste I don’t think anyone is going to be eating this lol 😂.

!! WARNING !!
There are side affects if you ingest peppermint essential oil. It’s best if you use the peppermint oil used in baking. THAT is fine to ingest.
Ky says
Hello, just made my toothpaste but I believe I made an error. I melted my coconut oil and now the baking soda sits at the bottom. What should I do?
Barbara says
I'm worried about coconut oil and plumbing; it solidifies when cool. I used to do "pulling" with coconut oil, and I was always having to spit it out into a cup that I would then drain into the trash. Do you just spit it into the sink? Thanks for any guidance.
keiji says
essential oil can kill you. how about you use peppermint extract or flavoring? don't be dumb and post this on the internet if gullible people will listen to it and die.

Reed says
Can kill you? If you are planning to ingest the entire bottle. My doctor has me taking peppermint oil for my stomach issues and I’m still kicking. People need to really do their research. You know certain foods can kill you over time as well.
Diane says
Thank you Reed, I also use peppermint for digestive issues at times. I’m still here after many years. The peppermint essential oil is from my Naturopathic Doctor.
Mackenzie says
How long does this last when stored?
Mr. Tooth says
I just made this recipe for the first time, but I replaced peppermint oil with clove oil which is used for sensitive teeth. This stuff leaves my teeth feeling much cleaner than store bought toothpaste.

How long does this last after it’s made??
Gabe says
Yea how long should this last after its made? And where should it be stored? Does it matter much?

I’ve been a dental hygienist for over 30 yrs. I applaud natural alternatives for cleaning teeth because of all the chemicals in regular toothpastes. However, please be mindful to brush your teeth gently with this baking soda toothpaste. Baking soda is a great neutralizer for cavity control but can also be very abrasive. Brush teeth for two minutes but with gentle pressure applied. A good way to test how hard you brush is to pinch your toothbrush handle between your pointer finger and your thumb. Brush your teeth holding the toothbrush handle while pinching it between the two fingers. That’s the pressure you should be using while brushing holding your toothbrush handle with your whole hand.
