What’s worse than getting ink on your favorite shirt or maybe even your sofa? While an ink stain may seem like a death sentence for clothes, it’s actually really easy to get out. You only need two things to get ink stains out of clothes and fabric…let me show you how!
There are all kinds of stains, and ink may be one of the most dreaded. For most stains on clothes, fabric and carpet, I use this 2 Ingredient Stain Remover that is amazing…it even removes red wine. For ink, that most likely won’t work, but no worries…I’ve got just what you need to get that ink stain out! I wanted to demonstrate using one of my favorite shirts so you can see that this trick really works. It doesn’t matter what color ink is on your clothes either. Let’s see how this works!
What gets ink stains out of clothes?
- hand sanitizer (gel works best / any brand)
- toothbrush
How do you get ink out of clothes?
Step 1: Pour a generous amount of hand sanitizer on the ink stain. You should test a small area of clothing first just to be sure it won’t bleed. I use it on all kinds of fabric and have never had that issue though.
Step 2: Use a toothbrush to work the sanitizer into the ink.
Step 3: Keep scrubbing the stain until it starts to disappear.
Step 4: Throw the clothing item in the washer or hand wash. If the stain still persists, repeat steps 1-3 until the stain is gone. Really tough ink stains may take a few tries. Once the stain is gone and the item has been washed, you can dry it as well. Do not put the item in the dryer until the stain has been completely removed, or you could set the stain.
This method works best on fresh ink stains (within 24 hours of the stain being set), but can also work on older stains as well.
For older ink stains, you may want to let the sanitizer sit on the fabric for up to 10 minutes before scrubbing.

Love your tips..use many of them. How do you think this would work on cotton/always be blend? My son’s brand new pants “cauggt” a swipe of an ink pen smack in the middle of the thigh. Of course the pants are light khaki and the ink is dark blue.😡.Almost afraid to try for fear of ruining the pants. American Eagle jeans..never worn. Any suggestions are welcome. *I haven’t tested a small area yet. I’m not sure if ruining an expensive pair of pants is eorth an inch long ink spot..hmm.
*cotton/elastane… stupid autocorrect
I haven’t tried it on jeans, but I think I would spot check it on a hidden area before using…maybe under the bottom cuff of the jeans.
This works amazing! I got black ink on a white quilted vest. I’m so impressed! Thank you!!!
You’re so welcome!
