It's summer, and it is HOT! On a hot summer day, I don't think there is anything better than a cold, sweet, juicy slice of watermelon! We are huge fans in this house, and a full watermelon goes quickly around here. A few year ago, I had bought a watermelon to take to a cookout. I just brought it along with me to my friend Jen's house, and was ready to cut it open. I had my knife out ready to get to work when Jenny stopped me. She said, "Jess, let me show you how to cut a watermelon the right way." I swear, it's one of the best tips I have ever learned, and today I'm going to share it with you!
First you have to pick the right watermelon. Mr. Peyton from our farmer's market told me you want to find one with a big yellow spot. That means it's had time to rest on the ground and ripen. He actually said, "Get yee one with a big ol' yeller spot on it. That means she's had time to juice up." I do love my Mr. Peyton!
Now, slice that baby right down the middle.
This is the part when I used to get stumped, but it's super easy from here, I promise!
Slice each half of the watermelon again. You should have four quarters.
Now take a smaller knife and slice along the rind in a curving motion from one end to the other.
While the melon is still sitting in the rind, cut thin or thick slices.
Now dump your slices into a pretty dish, or leave them right there, ripe for the picking!
I prefer to leave my watermelon in the refrigerator for a bit so it's nice and cold.
This is my favorite summer go to, and I have some other friends that are sharing their favorite go to summer recipes...

That looks soo delicious... your friend was right about the spot of yellow... also,a slightly hollow sound when you thump it means it's ready ... and the best tasting ones are usually the ones that split on there own as soon as you start 1st cut...yummy! Nothing like a good slice of melon & the juice running down your chin!!!no salt on mine tho,thanks!()
