Killing weeds can be a tedious job for sure. I do as much digging and pulling of the weeds as I can, but some of them either just keep coming back or creep up in hard to reach areas...namely, between our patio pavers. We have kids and pets, so I really try to stay away from chemical filled weed killers. I have been making my own homemade weed killer for the past couple of years and it works great!
This homemade weed killer will help deter weeds in a safe way so you can feel good about not harming your kids or animals when using it, plus you can make it with some household ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry. So, whose ready to kill some weeds?

What You Will Need:
2 Cups of Distilled White Vinegar ( Purchase HERE )
2 Tablespoons of Dish Liquid ( Purchase HERE )
Add 2 cups of distilled white vinegar and 2 tablespoons of dish liquid (any brand will work) to a clean spray bottle and shake well before each use. The vinegar kills the weeds, and they dish soap helps the vinegar stick to the weeds instead of just sliding off of them.
Just spray on weeds and watch them die within a few days. It's best to spray the weeds when it is going to be dry outside for a couple of days so the mixture has time to penetrate the weeds and their roots. If it rains, just reapply after everything is dry.

If you get some on your good plants, will it kill them? So do I need to be careful about where I spray?
Jessica says
Hi, Deborah! It Shouldn't harm your good plants at all, only weeds. You could test it out on a small portion of a leaf of your plants if it would make you more comfortable. ~Jess

Does it kill dandelions?

Can you use cleaning vinegar for this?
Paul Harris says
Wow, just tried this and it works great. Sprayed a few days ago and weeds are turning brown. It is even killing a very invasive weed which standard weed killer did nothing on.
Thank you so much, cheaper than weedkiller and works better.

Not quite sure how the vinegar is going to know which is a weed and which is a flower plant It might not kill grass which is not a broad leaf plant
Garnet says
I won't use harsh chemicals on my yard because of my bunny who lives under my deck. I pull weeds out by hand to protect her but guess who is losing the battle - me. I honestly don't believe this mixture would hurt her. In fact I think the vinegar smell would drive her away from eating the greens and she would look elsewhere. P.S. She does enjoy the lettuce in my neighbors garden. :)

Does your natural weed killer w vinegar and soap kill weeds but my weeds are surrounded by bushes . Will this kill my bushes roots ? And my bushes?
Jessica says
It shouldn't kill roots, but it may kill leaves that it is sprayed on. I would be careful using it around plants that you don't want to be effected.
Kerrie says
Not sure how that weed spray affects the soil. Is it okay? I usually want to replant something after I get rid of weeds.
Jessica says
It shouldn't effect the soil, and usually washes away after rain.
Donna Kimble Dobson says

Will your weed spray hurt a fruit and vegetable garden box. I need to kill the grass and weeds that are in the box but not harm the soil for when I plant my plants.
Sherrie says
Hi Jessica, I just looked at your weed killer recipe. But, I don't want to use Dawn dish soap for the soap in it it's very harsh on a lot of things. Can I use Seventh Generation Dish Soap instead?
