Save Money and Energy by Switching the Direction of Your Ceiling Fan in the Summer and WinterIt’s getting chilly here in Kentucky, and we have already switched the heat on.  As I was walking though my living room this morning, I got a sudden chill.  I looked up and realized that my ceiling fan was on, but not moving in the right direction.  You may be thinking…hmmm?  What?  Why would you even have your ceiling fan on if it is cold outside?  Well, friends, I use my ceiling fan all year round…I just switch the rotation direction of the blades depending on which season it is.

Save Money and Energy by Switching the Direction of Your Ceiling Fan in the Summer and WinterSee that little switch?  It changes the direction of the blade rotation.

Change the Direction of Your Ceiling Fan in the Summer and Winter for to Regulate Air FlowIn the winter, you actually want that switch in the up position, and in the summer, it should be in the down position as shown above.

Switch Your Ceiling Fan to Clockwise Direction in the WinterIn the cooler months, having the blades circulating in a clockwise direction will create an updraft.  This will force the warm air near the ceiling down into your living space which will save energy and money because you are actually using the warm air up there instead of having to turn your thermostat up!

Set Your Ceiling Fan to Move Counter Clockwise in the SummerDuring the warmer months, having the blades circulating in a counter clockwise motion will create a nice breeze which will make you feel cooler.  Then you can enjoy a breeze instead of having to turn your thermostat down!

This is one of the easiest ways you can save money and energy in your home…with the switch of a flip!

I am down to one fan in the house…replaced them all with chandys…we have the one in the great room with the 18 foot ceilings and it is always on the warm/up position as it is the only time we use it to draw the heat down…..this is a great thing to share Jessica!!!…

I own a Haiku fan that is extremely energy efficient and also has a whoosh mode that changes speeds so it feels like a natural breeze rather than just constant wind. This is very effective at keeping the body cool.

Easy way to remember up or down. In winter you normally turn thermostat UP in degrees, as in summer, you typically tun thermostat DOWN in degrees. Same with fan. Just FYI to help remember.

WHOOSH mode sounds great to me! I have to look up this Haiku fan. Does it recite poetry, too? :-)
P.S. My kitchen fan, the switch goes left-right-too, William. When I switch it for summer, a piece of paper or foil near the fan will move a little. And wiggle the flames on my gas stove, so I keep low speed during cooking.

I just figured this out after a lot of trouble. On my fan, the summertime setting is on the left, and the wintertime setting is on the right.I actually marked it with permanent marker so I won’t forget.

I have a fan installed above my open staircase to my finished basement. I only run it in the summer, and only in the updraft position, to pull the cooler basement air up into the main floor living space.
I save a fortune on my AC costs!

Thank you, thank you. Finally someone answered my question: What is the position of the switch, Up or down for winter/summer? In the winter switch is up and in the summer switch is down position. It only took or so sites to get a simple answer.

I World like to get into the empty space between ground and the floor of my mobile home to chck some PVC conducts and to connect some TV and internet cables. How can I eliminate some insects?.

Insects hate the smell of peppermint, so I use peppermint essential oil to keep them at bay. It will keep them away, but it won’t kill them. I have used borax to kill them before. Hope this helps!
