A Kitchen Mantel…Sort Of

Hey, peeps!  I’ve been a little MIA lately…you know, end of school, vacation, yada, yada, yada.

We just got home on Saturday, and it seemed like I immediately had the itch to change things up.  It happens every single time we come home from vacation.  All of the sudden, I feel the need to lighten and brighten up every room!  Does this happen to everyone or is it just me?

Well, after getting everything put away (except the laundry…that could take all week), I walked in my kitchen and thought, hmmm…what can I do differently in here?  I want everything organized, but a little cottagish.  Cottagish~a little shabby, makes ya feel homey, cutesy tutesy, comfy cozy.  So, I decided to tackle the top of my refrigerator.  I had piled my crock pot and a bunch of random things up there, and it looked trashy.  Like, embarrassingly hideous.  So, I took everything down and thought why not decorate it just like I would my mantel.  Weird, I know, but now I love it!  I started by propping an old window that I found at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore for $2 against the cabinets.  Then, I added a Canada Dry Ginger Ale crate with some geraniums tucked in…kind of reminds me of a window box.  Finally, I threw a pedestal, canister, and some planters that I had sitting in my bathroom up there, and took a step back.  It looks so cute and cottagish!  Now, I am happy!

Doesn’t it look cute!  Maybe I will decorate the top of my fridge every season…like a mantel in my kitchen!

I also took an old wire basket that I bought at the ReStore for $1 and gave it a quick coat of silver spray paint.  I plopped my utensils, olive oil, and my other favorite kitchen spices down in it and sat it next to my stove…adorbs, huh?

I had a smaller wire basket on my craft table, and used it to organize my coffee and breakfast goodies.  I am a creamer and splenda kind of girl, and I do love me some iced coffee!  So, I added a sugar (splenda) bowl, my creamer pitcher, some french vanilla syrup for iced coffees and frappes, a mason jar filled with powdered sugar for french toast (I poked holes in the top for sprinkling), and an old mason jar just for cuteness!  We have a Keurig coffee maker, so we keep our coffee pods in a drawer.  I just love having everything together!

Lastly, I added a vase filled with herbs from our garden.  It makes the kitchen smell soooo heavenly, and forces me to actually use the herbs that we grow!  I absolutely love being able to snip some rosemary to add to roasting chicken, or adding a fresh mint leaf to my iced tea.

So, what do you think…is it totally weird to decorate the top of your fridge like a mantel?

I took the doors off my cabinet up there because there is never anything I put up there I use and I decorated inside it like a window box or display area and people come in and say I’m going home and do that -it looks great. So I like your idea too.
I need to find some wire baskets to keep stuff in….

I like the matel in the kitchen idea. Right now I’ve got a TV up there and I don’t think anyone will allow me to remove it any time soon!

Hahaha, I do the same thing. It’s like the house has transformed when I was gone and I need to go back in and reclaim my space and make it work for the new day. I am in love with your wire basket and canada dry bin. :)

SO not weird! Looks so cute! I like Lorie’s suggestion of taking the doors off and decorating inside. Mine are just wasted space.

    Hope you enjoyed your vacation!

I love the idea! I too have unused cabinets up on top of the fridge! We do store a few things up there, but they could use a new location, I think!
