This weekend, I did a little updating in the kitchen. I opened up some of my cabinets and painted inside, and I love it! Any time I change things up or redecorate anything, I start looking a little more closely at the surroundings. The last time I updated my kitchen, it sparked my posts on How To Clean Between The Glass On Your Oven Doors and How To Clean Your Ceramic Stovetop. In this case, the cabinets that I painted surrounded my kitchen sink. Ummm…yuck is all I can say. Apparently, it had been a long time since I had given my sink a good cleaning. So, I decided I better clean my stainless steal sink thoroughly, and give it some shine!
I hate to share the grossness with you, but I’m about keepin’ it real, so here is the down and dirty of it…my gross kitchen sink…
And the crusty faucet. Yep, gross! Who even knows what that is…food? Lime build up? Whatever it is, I must have chosen not to see it until now. Shameful.
Let’s get her all cleaned up!
I started by spraying water over the entire sink and faucet.
Next, I sprinkled Barkeeper’s Friend over all of it. I first heard about this product while watching Martha Stewart years ago. It’s really inexpensive, and can be found in the cleaning section of most stores. It has a strange smell, but it’s amazing, and it won’t scratch up your sink!
Now get to scrubbing. Scrub every inch of the sink. The Barkeeper’s Friend will pull up all of the lime and food build up and even the stuff you can’t see.
Now, rinse the surfaces, and wipe clean with paper towels or a soft cloth. I use paper towels because I don’t want to ruin my bar mops. See all of the blackness? That’s the stuff you don’t notice that is all over your sink…the Barkeeper’s Friend helps pull it up.
Once I have wiped my sink clean, I usually spray it with some window cleaner and wipe it down one last time…now my sink is super clean!!!
This way, when I posted my Open Kitchen Cabinets With Aqua, White, Lime Green, & Silver Accents, I didn’t have to be ashamed of my dirty sink :)

I’ve never heard of Barkeeper’s Friend. I’m going to look for it next time I go shopping. I just realized that we have the same green kitchen counter top. Not that I don’t like it, it’s time for a change. We’re thinking of doing tile. I think we may even have the same toaster…T-Fal? Yeah, I notice the little things like that. :) Have a great day!

Spray that sink with a little lemon vinegar, and you’ll have a shine that will be hard not to love!
Can you find someone with a gross procelain sink, and do the same thing? Seems like only bleach works for getting out the gunk in the scratches. UGH.

I use to have a SS sink and what a pain in the butt it was but I had to comment on that cute little framed chalk board you have on your wall over your sink. Love the color :)
Thank you for this!!! I have been struggling with an ugly, dirty stainless steel sink. I’ve scrubbed with everything! Or so I thought. Comet did nothing. Windex nothing. Nothing got rid of the grime in this ugly sink! When I saw your post today I realized I have the Barkeepers Friend, but have never tried it on a sink! Why did I not think of this? Duh! I jumped over to my dingy sink, grabbed that Barkeepers Friend and went about scrubbing away. It took some elbox grease too, but it’s finally cleaner. The faucet is sparkling and I never thought that could happen! Thank you for sharing and keeping it real!

Would you believe I just cleaned my kitchen sinks with Bar Keepers Friend. Amazing what that stuff can do.
I love Bar Keepers Friend. It works fabulously on my aluminum pots and pans, removing stubborn water spots, burnt on crud, even that “brown” film that builds up over time on the bottom of the pan. Patience is required by I tell you, my West Bend aluminum pots and pans, purchased in 1966 for my “Hope” chest (obviously, back in the day when girls still did that, LOL!), look brand spanking new after being continuously used since 1969 (the year I graduated from high school and moved into my first apartment with two other girls). It also shines up and removes water rinks and mineral build-up on my aluminum double sink (looks a lot like yours, actually), as well as in my bathroom sinks, tubs and toilets.

I didn’t realize you could use it on stainless. I always used it on my porcelain sink. Now I do have a stainless one….and you say it does not scratch the stainless….wow
